Campervan Wild Camping UK: What's Actually Legal
The real legal picture for sleeping overnight in a van — not the backpacker-tent version most guides give you.
Last checked and updated: September 2026 — general information, not legal advice. Rules, byelaws and local restrictions change, so always check current signage and local guidance before you go.
Most "wild camping UK" guides are written for backpackers with a tent — and the law genuinely is different once you're asking about a vehicle instead. Sleeping in a campervan is judged partly under land access law (do you have the right to be there at all) and partly under parking and highway law (is overnight parking restricted at this specific spot) — and the two don't always line up the way you'd expect.
Scotland: The most permissive access rights in the UK, but built around lightweight on-foot camping — vans need extra care and local awareness. · England & Wales: No general right. Permission needed, with Dartmoor's exception covering foot campers only, not vehicles. · Northern Ireland: Permission needed almost everywhere.
Scotland
Most PermissiveThe Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code give the public a genuine right to camp on most unenclosed land, provided you're responsible about it — small groups, short stays, and leaving no trace. The catch for campervan owners: that right was built around backpackers with lightweight kit on foot, not vehicles. In practice, discreet overnight stops in a van are widely tolerated across much of Scotland, but a handful of honeypot areas — the North Coast 500 route being the best-known example — have introduced their own local restrictions after being overwhelmed by visitor numbers. Always check for local signage and byelaws before pitching up, especially anywhere popular enough to have a car park.
England & Wales
Permission NeededThere is no general right to wild camp in England or Wales — you need the landowner's permission, full stop. Dartmoor is the one well-known exception, confirmed by the Supreme Court in May 2025: the public has a statutory right to camp on the Dartmoor Commons. But that right is specifically for backpack-style camping on foot, following the National Park's own camping map and rules (no camping within 100m of a road, maximum two nights per spot). It does not extend to campervans or motorhomes — overnighting in a vehicle in Dartmoor's car parks, laybys or verges isn't covered by this right and isn't permitted without separate authority. Outside Dartmoor, wild camping on foot is quietly tolerated in some remote upland areas of the Lake District and Eryri (Snowdonia) by long-standing convention rather than any legal right — the same caution applies to vans.
Northern Ireland
Permission NeededSimilar picture to England and Wales — there's no general right to camp or overnight without the landowner's agreement. Always seek permission first.
Wild Camping vs. Overnight Parking — Know the Difference
This is the bit most guides miss, and it matters more for a van than a tent: "wild camping" and "overnight parking" are answered by completely different laws. Wild camping is a land-access question. Overnight parking in a vehicle is a highway and parking-law question — governed by Traffic Regulation Orders and signage at that specific lay-by, car park or road, which councils set independently of any camping rights. A spot can be entirely legal to park overnight in even in a country with no wild camping right at all, and a beautiful wild camping spot can sit next to a car park with a strict no-overnight-parking order. Always check the actual signage at the specific location — it overrides any general assumption either way.
Doing It Responsibly
- Arrive late, leave early, and stay one night per spot unless you know it's explicitly permitted for longer
- Keep a low profile — awnings, chairs and outdoor cooking set-ups signal "camping" rather than "parking", which is a meaningful legal distinction in a grey-area spot
- Leave zero trace — take all waste with you, including grey water
- Apps like Park4Night and Brit Stops are genuinely useful for finding spots where overnight parking is already known to be welcomed
- When genuinely off-grid, a decent power station and a well-pitched driveaway awning make a legitimate campsite stay far more comfortable than trying to stretch a grey-area spot into a multi-night stop

FAQs
Common QuestionsIs it legal to sleep overnight in a campervan in the UK?
It depends entirely on where you park, not just which country you're in. Scotland has the most permissive general access rights, but they're built around lightweight on-foot camping rather than vehicles specifically. England and Wales have no general right at all — you need the landowner's permission, or you need to be on land where overnight parking is explicitly allowed, such as a lay-by with no restriction, a farm "aire", or a car park that permits it.
Can I wild camp in my campervan on Dartmoor?
No. Dartmoor's 2025 Supreme Court ruling confirmed a public right to wild camp on the Commons, but it's specifically for backpack-style camping on foot. Motorhomes and campervans are not covered, and overnighting in a vehicle in Dartmoor's car parks, laybys or verges is not permitted without express authority.
What's the difference between wild camping and overnight parking?
Wild camping is about land access law — your right to be on a piece of land for recreation. Overnight parking is a completely different legal question, governed by highway and parking law — whether a specific lay-by, car park or road has a restriction (a Traffic Regulation Order or signage) against staying overnight. A spot can be entirely legal to park overnight in a vehicle even where "wild camping" has no legal standing at all, and vice versa.
